It’s a subtle change but a really unique one – and has opened my eyes to some potentially great game music arrangements outside of the amazing Visa Roster.īeek has captured a warm innocence in his soundtrack for Sokoban Online. Rounding things off is the excellent “Credits (Beatbox Version)” which replaces all the percussion with real beatboxing. Whilst it suffers a little in recording quality, the arrangement is soothing and rolling like the ocean of the mind. “Thoughful (acoustic version)” is a roughly recorded piano version. “Blissful (16-bit version)” is utterly adorable as the chipsets are replaced with metal drums and brass synths. In fact, the latter two are probably my favourite mood tracks on the whole release, Youthful being like a dance anthem and Grateful’s happy swing beat really playing to Beek’s strengths as a melody maker. “Cheerful”, “Youthful” and “Grateful” are three quite different tracks that all add that playful innocence that the rest of the soundtrack imbues so well. Taking you beyond the game is a selection of bonus tracks.

The main section of the soundtrack is closed off with a fantastically happy and full to the brim “Credits” which is a standout. “Thoughtful” is the ballad and is a bit bass heavy to let the arpeggios shine through whereas “Sleepytime” is airy and breezy in its waltzing chords. I found myself putting something into the microwave to its beat. “Blissful” is like a Haribo marching band. “Joyful” channels just that, whilst “Mindful” has an excellent play of that tense tradition of going up and down a chord to a double beat like time is stalking you. The theme “Sokoban Online” is cute and upbeat whilst having a catchy melody but its the five mood tracks that really showcase the simplicity of the melodies and soundscape. The fuzzy rubber bass lines are cute, the percussion is crunchy white noise and pitch bends are adorable.

If you like puzzles, this is really a “must have”.Īs this game is very old, it will run very fast even in Dosbox standard settings, so you would want to reduce the amount of cpu-cycles made in Dosbox by pressing CTRL-F11 multiple times. It has kept me puzzled for hours, and I have really enjoyed it. But these things are really not important in this game, as it’s the puzzle that you should focus on.Īll in all, I think Sokoban is one of the best puzzle games ever made. The graphics are nice, if you think of how old the game is. The only sound there is in the game is the steps of the man when he moves, and a little melody when a level is complete. The sound in Sokoban is nothing to brag about. When I was a kid, the guys and me used a lot of time making levels to challenge each other. And if this is not enough, there is an integrated level editor, so you can make your own levels. Then you play in turn, and will get points after the number of moves used and the time passed.
